Early Spring Fishing.

FishPal's Gary Scott with Sir Ian BothamAs the clock finally ticks in to February more rivers see the start of their salmon season, not least the Dee and Tweed, which is great news. Whilst the weather continues to throw everything at us, only the most determined of anglers are out in force casting a line across their favourite bank. The thrill of an early springer does get your heart racing!

It was great to see a tremendous turnout for the opening ceremony on the River Dee at Potarch. Ross Brawn of F1 fame and a passionate salmon angler enjoyed the honour of the first cast. This years opening was a very special occasion as the Dee celebrated 150 years of stewardship under the Dee Board – a superb day enjoyed by all and nine springers caught too – excellent!

Beats along the Tweed enjoyed opening day celebrations, with many a ‘quaich’ blessing the river from the upper reaches to lower, great to get things finally under way. A challenging day faced anglers, with a high and peat stained river. Great to see the first fish of the season caught by regular Tweed rod Kent Hakansson, from Sweden, on Upper Floors at 9lbs.

The Teith opening was supported by none other than Sir Ian Botham, a big fan of the river. Gary Scott, who does some fantastic work for us here at FishPal, enjoyed dinner with Ian the night before and also joined in the opening day festivities. Great photo Gary !

So we all now wait and see what the weather throws at us in the week ahead. One thing for sure is that with so much early season availability to choose from (find fishing) there will be anglers out all this week, facing the elements. Keep a close eye on the river levels, reports and prospects for the week ahead on the various river sites. If you are not already following our many Facebook pages please use them. There are posts coming in thick and fast during the day, from around the globe, keeping you up to date with all that is fishing.

This week sees me meeting a number of very interesting people, which will take me from the borders into the central belt and deep into the highlands. Our Marketing Director, Anne Woodcock, will be visiting the British Fly Fair in Staffordshire this weekend (8th & 9th February). Do come and say hello!

I am pursuing several new fishing avenues, which I look forward to announcing in due course – exciting times here at FishPal – stay tuned!

Tight lines to all of you out on the river this week. Don’t forget to send us your photographs of your prized bar of silver being returned.
