A busy week last week spent up on the River Spey, a river that was at a good height and running clear. I was lucky enough to be invited to fish opening day on Wester Elchies, a really lovely beat just behind Aberlour.
Before we got down to having our first cast of the season it was over to Aberlour to join in the rivers opening day celebrations which this year was was carried out by Euan Mcllwraith from the BBC’s Lanward programme. Some thought provoking words about making sure we all collectively look after our precious asset/river. After the traditional blessing by local minister Rev Shuna Dicks of Craigellachie and Aberlour, a 12 year old bottle if Aberlour malt whisky was poured into the river by angler Davy Leith who caught last years first fish.
Great to see so many people turn up and great to be able to join in in all the fun!
Opening day surrendered only 3 fresh fish, the first to Mrs Anne Cameron from the beautiful Delfur beat by an angler who has fished the beat regularly and who’s knowledge of the pools and the help of the excellent ghillies on Defur, proving to be a deadly combination!
The week also allowed me to catch up with a number of Spey people which was great. I have been trying to meet up with owners and explain just how we can help raise the profile of the river through our FishSpey site. Great to see many more beats now being represented with more and more availability being released. At very reasonable priced fishing available all through the spring months I will be back!!
Alas for us on Wester Elchies, no fresh fish caught but everyone kept busy enough catching some well mended melts. Thanks to Sam our ghillie for his usual banter and advice and for keeping the stove fired up for us all to defrost around, nothing better!
Family holiday this week for half term and unfortunately not on the river bank.
The weather forecasters as always for this time of the year forecasting a mixed bag of wet and at times windy weather but hopefully enough rest bite to allow you all to have a cast.
If, like me, you are constantly looking at river heights or reading new reports, make sure you have our FishPal APP downloaded to your phone. Simple to use and will give you all the information you need.
As always, if you need any help in arranging your fishing them give the team a ring. You will be speaking to passionate anglers like yourselves with contacts on rivers all across the country.
Tight lines everybody for the week ahead and as ever, don’t forget to send us your photos of that fresh springer being safely released!!
