As I sit writing this first blog of 2019 I do so with thoughts turning to tomorrow’s opening day celebrations at Meikleour to kick of the new season on the River Tay.
It’s always such a good day to catch up with friends and fellow anglers who like me, are all itching for that first cast of the season. Meikleour do such a good job of the opening celebrations with anglers invited to fish for a £10 donation which goes to Angling For Youth Development AFYD. There are some fantastic raffle prizes to be won too, not least a Hardy Perfect reel which I am sure will be popular with whoever might be lucky enough to win this magical reel.
I have been speaking people on the Tay this morning and they all seem to be in good spirits. Decent conditions are being reported and many a kelt splashing about in their pools. The big question is, will we see a few fresh fish being landed? That would be just be brilliant if we could see photos of fresh fish early on, which will certainly raise everyones spirits!
The fly choice is all important of course and last night I checked my box of Black and Yellows which are my “go too” flies for this time of year – will they do the trick I wonder?
This time last year I seem to remember fishing in a foot of snow so conditions this year will be much more kind to us all although I really do like to fish in the snow for some reason – just seems magical landing a fish on the bank covered with snow.
Many beats will be doing their own opening ceremonies tomorrow as is tradition on the Tay and I wish everyone a great day out and first cast of the season – usually with the excuse it will take a few hours to sort out the casting but always a joy to be back out on the river.
Anne has a new show called Countryside on CVFM Radio and the first half of the program will be about the opening day celebrations with some fine guests lined up to give everyone a flavour of what has been going on. You can tune in at 7pm to hear what’s being said on CVFM Radio. If you miss the first show you can listen to it again via MixCloud.
Keep the photos coming in of your opening day adventure, so we can share them with everyone else who hasn’t managed to get out on the river.
Tight lines to all for 2019, look forward to catching up with many of you on the river bank soon!!
