Skarnsundet is regarded as one of the best fishing locations in the Trondheimsfjord. Its nutrient rich waters and strong tidal currents attract large shoals of feeding fish.
The Trondheimfjord is the third longest fjord in Norway and one of the most spectacular. Due to Skarnsundets location, we can offer fantastic fishing in calm waters all year round.
Phill Dale is the owner and manager of Skarnsundet. Moving there in 2008 from the UK to fulfil his dream of working in the recreational sport fishing business.
Hi, my name is Phill Dale. I am originally from East Yorkshire in the North East of England. I migrated over to Norway in May 2008. To be honest it was a very lucky break. I had been to Skarnsundet on a fishing holiday in April 2008 and was taken out by camp owner/Manager Klaas Jan Jonkman. We had a great day out and I asked Klaas if he needed any help during the summer… Three weeks later with everything I owned in the back on my 20 year old VW Golf and my last 200 GBP I arrived in Skarnsundet. A day I will never forget and certainly the biggest turning point of my life.
Klaas taught me just about all I know about being a good host, guide, boat mechanic, cleaner, accountant, sales manager, etc. It was going to be the hardest, most enjoyable, most emotional Five years of my life.
In 2012 I graduated to be manager/owner of Skarnsundet. This was a major step forward for us as we decided which direction to take the business. Species was always the way we wanted to focus on, shore fishing, boat fishing and Kayak fishing would be our main products but as a very keen Salmon angler it was very difficult for me to ignore all the fantastic salmon rivers we have locally.
The beauty of Skarnsundet is that any ability of angler can have the chance to catch 30 different species in a week, fish in calm safe waters, be looked after by our professional team and have a chance to catch that fish of a life time.
In the well stocked on-site shop you will find our fishing guide who will be able to give you all the help and advice on equipment to use and the best fishing places to visit. If it is your first trip to Skarnsundet, our fishing guide will take you on a complimentary fishing trip educating you on how to use the boat and sonar equipment. He will also take you to popular marks to fish.
Light Tackle fishing
This type of fishing is a lot of fun and in Skarnsundet 80% of our fishing is done with a rod of unto 100g casting weight. Its often better to use a short rod from the boat (2.2m) is a nice length. Diana, shimano and savage gear make some fantastic well priced rods! Check out Alderney angling those guys have some very well priced gear for sale on there mail order site! For the past three years I have used the Diawa kenzaki braid rods for my lighter fishing . The 6/12lb rods are fantastic for fishing at Skarnsundet.
My reel of choice at the moment is the small but very smooth Abu Revo, a fantastic little reel that handles cod, coal fish, halibut and hard fighting pollock with ease.
Ive twinned the Abu up with 0.18mm Power pro, which is a reliable hard wearing braid and tipped it off with a 60lb rubbing leader!
Terminal tackle, shads, pirks, etc:
Shads are probably the most effective way of fishing at Skarnsundet, 4inch and 6inch Kopyto relax shads or similar is all you will need. No need to spend hundreds on shads. Just bring three of each color. Red and yellow, green, dark green and red will be fine. The jig heads should range from 40g – 100g.
Pirks are always effective at Skarnsundet, small silvers picks are deadly. Bring a range of weights from 50g – 120g.
Terminal tackle, bring a small assortment of hooks, links, leads and beads for when you decide to do a spot of bait fishing for the flat fish or haddock.
Take a look at http://www.alderneyangling.com and the guys have been to Skarnsundet many times and can help you out to make sure you bring the right equipment with you.
Deep water fishing
If you wanting to target deep water species such as Ling, Lumb, skate Blue ling and many other species while fishing at Skarnsundet then I suggest you bring a 20b – 30lb boat rod twinned with a medium sized multiplier. I use a Shimano Tekota 700, which is a strong, reliable well priced reel will be fine.
We suggest that you use a braid with a 0.28 diameter. This will strong enough to tackle most fish and thin enough to cut out resistance in the water.
Shore Fishing at Skarnsundet
Skarnsundet Fjordsenter is the perfect destination to enjoy your shore fishing holiday in Norway. There are more species than you can imagine and fish of a lifetime waiting for you!
Skarnsundet was the first fishing camp in Norway to offer organised shore fishing holidays and now we have more than 500 shore anglers visiting us every year. The shore fishing could not be any easier, regardless of your ability there are marks that will suite every angler, from strong tidal currents, sandy beaches and deep gullies. After 2017 we restricted the amount of shore anglers to 12 persons per week. This has many advantages for the fish stocks and anglers.
The best fishing marks are all within a 15min drive of Skarnsundet. On your first day the on-site fishing guide will take you around all of the marks, showing you how to fish the marks, where they are and the best times to fish them.
Included in the shore fishing holiday will be a hand held GPS and folder with all the shore fishing maps. At Skarnsundet we are always here to help you catch that dream fish.
The shore fishing season starts in September and runs through until May. During this time we have some of the best shore fishing in Europe within a 15 minute drive of Skarnsundet.
There is a break water just 50 meters from the apartment door that regularly produces specimen cod, haddock and pollock. Cod have been caught up to 49.5 lb from the shore and almost each angler goes home with a new personal best and memories that will last a lifetime.
